Gabrovo: The Capital of Humor and Satire

Gabrovo is a unique city and region in central Bulgaria, famously known as the "Capital of Humor and Satire" and the "Bulgarian Manchester" due to its industrial history. Situated at the foot of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), it is a place where tradition, industry and wit meet.

History

Gabrovo's history began with the blacksmith Racho, who, according to legend, founded the settlement on the banks of the Yantra River.

The Revival Period
In the 19th century, Gabrovo became an important center of crafts and education. It was home to the Aprilov Gymnasium (1835), the first secular Bulgarian school.

Industrial powerhouse
In the early 20th century, the city's rapid development in textiles and leather earned it the nickname "Bulgarian Manchester".

Thrift
Historically, Gabrovo's inhabitants were known for being incredibly frugal and clever. This developed into a culture of self-deprecating humor that the city celebrates today.
